There are many different styles of Hei Matua.
There are also many different whakapapa kōrero (oral histories).  
One of these, is the amazing adventures of Maui tiki tiki ā Tauranga and how he fished up Te Ika ā Maui (north island) using the jawbone of his kuia, Muriranga Whenua, which was imbued with much power and magic.
This taonga (amulet) represents innovation, transformation and spiritual awareness.
