CREATING A TOKI (GREENSTONE CHISEL)
WITH TE KAHA
- Participants will learn traditional Maori history, both metaphysical and material, while creating a fully functional greenstone chisel with bound handle.
- This instrument was not only a carving tool, but a taonga (treasure) of great mana and prestige.
- Students will also be taught a waiata (song) and takutaku (prayer) while creating by hand a toki pounamu (greenstone chisel).
- The vision of this workshop is to enable the students to interact in all levels of the creation of a tool and art piece.
Te Kaha has been carving pounamu for 17 years. The Aotearoa (New Zealand) based artist specialises in traditional styles of work in pounamu and other indigenous stone. His sculptures are included in collections in the UK, Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand.
Te Kaha is represented by John Leech Gallery in New Zealand.
This three-day workshop is limited to 10 participants.
